DJIBOUTI – Ethiopian Airlines and the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority (DPFZA) have agreed to launch a freight transport service, which aims to transport more than 400,000 tonnes of goods, mainly from China to Africa, according to African Aerospace.
The agreement will help the Ethiopian Airlines to double its existing cargo service.
The investment agreement between Great Horn Investment Holding and China Merchants was signed in late 2020.
The project represents the final stage in the implementation of the Port-Park-City concept – the full integration of ports, industrial parks, and services in Djibouti.
In an investment amount of more than US$350 Million, the project will make Djibouti a leading business centre where the business community around the world ‘meet and exchange’ and will eventually create more of 27,000 jobs.
Djibouti Ports and Free Zone Authority launched a landmark project – the regeneration of the historical Port of Djibouti into the East Africa International Special Business Zone last year.

This new development will play a key role in advancing Djibouti’s Vision 2035, which aims to maximise the advantages of its geostrategic position.
Over the last decade, Djibouti has built new specialized port infrastructure to gradually distribute the activities of the historical Port which was initially built-in 1888.
The new infrastructures include Doraleh Multipurpose Port that was launched in 2017 and is one of the most modern ports in Africa with the ability to provide accommodation for vessels with up to 100,000 DWT.
Other developments include the SGTD, a key transhipment hub connected to the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway, and the Ports of Ghoubet and Tadjourah, which are mainly designed to handle salt and potash respectively.
