GHANA – The House of Representatives in Ghana has approved a US$96 million loan agreements from Oeke and Commerzbank Aktiengesellschaft (Commerzbank AG) for the extension of drinking water supply systems in Sekondi-Takoradi, two twin cities in Ghana.
Oeke will provide a US$83.8 million loan and Commerzbank Aktiengesellschaft, a German bank, will provide US$12 million for the project.
The project is expected to improve the supply of drinking water in at least 30 villages around Sekondi-Takoradi, where water scarcity has a major impact on economic activities and health services.
Amongst the projects financed are the construction of a pumping station and a new drinking water plant. The Ghanaian authorities indicate that this water will be transported to various reservoirs via pipelines and distributed to the inhabitants via standpipes.
The project is expected to improve the supply of drinking water in at least 30 villages around Sekondi-Takoradi, where water scarcity has a major impact on economic activities and health services.
The capacity of the installations has not been mentioned, nor the date on which work will start, but the Ghanaian government says that the work is expected to take 40 months. The authorities of this West African country are also planning to rehabilitate some drinking water installations.
The realization of the Sekondi-Takoradi drinking water project will enable the Ghanaian government to extend the water distribution network. It is part of its policy to supply all Ghanaians with drinking water and ensuring access to safe potable water by the year by 2030 UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6.
The project will also aid and improve on the services of health facilities, improve economic activities, create jobs in the catchment area.
Upon completion, the project is expected to help in the reduction in the prevalence of water-borne diseases, enhance opportunities for agro-processing and businesses, and generally improve the social well-being of the people in the project area.
The beneficiary communities include: Takoradi, Effiakuma, Kwesimintsim, Kojokrom, West Tanokrom, Anaji, Sekondi, New Takoradi, Essikado, Apremdo, Keikum, Ntankoful, Ngyyiresia, East Tanokrom, Effia Village and Fijai.
The rest are: Assakai, Aduembra, Kansaworado, Nkroful, Anoadze, Abuesi, Apowa, Inchaban, Ketan, Dixcove, Estates, Shama, Hwendo, Hotopo and surrounding villages.
