Jumia diversifies into entertainment with the launch of new gaming service

AFRICA – Jumia Africa’s largest e-commerce platform has partnered with Mondia, a leading technology company to launch Jumia Games, a competitively priced entertainment category on the JumiaPay App.

The new gaming service from Jumia and Mondia will be available in five African countries including Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, Kenya and Ghana where Jumia has a significant following.

Jumia however has plans to expand the service to Jumia customers in Tunisia and Côte d’Ivoire over the next few months.

At a monthly fee of about US$1.77, JumiaPay consumers will have full access to games in the Jumia Games services.

Jumia Games according to a statement from Mondia, is equipped with thousands of high-quality games such as CR7, Ben10, Tom and Jerry and Cartoon Network games which consumers can enjoy once they subscribe.

 “The gaming industry is expected to grow at a CGAR (Compounded Growth Annual Rate) of 12% until 2025 and with more than 200 million Africans who are below the age of 35, the continent has tremendous potential in the mobile gaming segment.”

 Dr, Amadeo further noted that the deal with Jumia further reinforces Mondia’s reputation for delivering the best and latest digital entertainment to consumers.

“With the launch of this new category on JumiaPay Apps, we are providing our consumers with an exciting digital gaming and entertainment experience,” Sami Louali – EVP Financial Services at Jumia Group said.

News regarding the launching of Jumia Games was well accepted in the stock market resulting in Jumia Shares which are listed at the New York appreciating value by 15 percent.

Investors are cheering this news because it appears Jumia is following a game plan that’s straight out of the playbooks of successful e-commerce leaders from around the globe.

Just last year, it launched a subscription service similar to Amazon Prime called Jumia Prime in select markets.

In Latin America, MercadoLibre is the dominant e-commerce player, and its Mercado Pago payments platform has proven popular. Jumia, following suit, created JumiaPay.

And in Asia, there’s Sea Limited, which used its growing video gaming business as a launchpad to get into e-commerce and mobile payments, too. And now, Jumia has Jumia Games.

These other companies have delivered market-crushing returns to investors. But more importantly, their businesses have thrived and are thriving by facilitating digital transformations in their primary regions of operations.

Africa is a continent ripe for digital disruption, and Jumia is a clear top candidate to do it.
