SOUTH AFRICA – Mobile telecommunications operator MTN Group has appointed Nigerian-American national, Chika Ekeji, as executive responsible for strategy and transformation to lead the mobile network operator’s growth strategy.

Ekeji, who joins MTN from management consultancy McKinsey & Company in Nigeria, begins his new role with the company next week.

At McKinsey & Company, Ekeji led the West Africa Digital Practice and served telco, financial services, and public sector clients across Africa.

“We are very pleased that Chika is joining us as we work to accelerate our strategic repositioning,” says MTN Group chief operating officer Jens Schulte-Bockum.

Ekeji who holds a Master of Engineering in Computer Science degree from Cornell University and an MBA from MIT w will be based in South Africa.

To support the execution of the repositioned strategy, Ekeji joins a group of other recent appointees, including the new group chief financial officer, Tsholofelo Molefe.

In recent week, MTN has also made changes to the group’s regional structure and the executive committee.

Effective from January 2021, MTN Ghana became part of the group’s West and Central Africa (WECA) region.

MTN’s Southern and East Africa and Ghana (SEAGHA) region was renamed the Southern and East Africa (SEA) region.

Ebenezer Asante, the SEAGHA vice president since 2017, became the new WECA vice president, and Yolanda Cuba, former group’s chief digital and fintech officer, took over as the SEA vice president.
