EGYPT – Telecom Egypt and the Sudatel Telecom Group, telecommunication service providers, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the field of international connectivity between Egypt and Sudan.
The cooperation aims to achieve optimal utilisation of the network linking the two countries, whilst developing the link between the two countries with the latest technologies.
This will mean a link is created between the Sudatel landing station in Port Sudan and the TE landing stations in the Red Sea and submarine cables there.
The agreement was signed via video conference by Adel Hamed, Managing Director and CEO of TE, and Magdi Taha, CEO and General Manager of the Sudatel Telecom Group.
It comes as part of TE’s endeavour to develop projects with the Sudatel Group and carry out continuous development of the infrastructure between the two countries. This will take place in a way that serves the customers of the two companies.
This highlights TE’s strategy which aims to connect with its neighbouring countries, including the rest of Africa. The aim is to achieve comprehensive digital transformation in Africa.
This step comes in conjunction with the Hybrid African Ring Path (HARP) submarine cable system project launched by TE, which will connect the entire African continent with Egypt and Europe.
Hamed said that the MoU with Sudatel allows for the exchange of experiences, whilst maximising benefit from the current connection between Egypt and Sudan. It will also work to create new opportunities for international connectivity through submarine cables with the aim of pushing towards digital transformation in Egypt and the region.
For his part, Taha explained that the MoU comes as part of the evolving relationship between Sudan and Egypt, which would benefit the region in various fields.
He added that the signature comes in accordance with the strategic vision of Sudatel Group in bringing about technological development, and promoting means of joint cooperation on continental and international levels.
This step comes in conjunction with the HARP submarine cable system launched by Telecom Egypt, which will connect the entire African continent with Egypt and Europe.
Telecom Egypt recorded a net profit of LE 4.9 billion (US$312.90m) during 2020, marking an increase of 10 percent on a year- on year basis (YoY).
The company added that its consolidated revenue reached LE 31.9 billion (US$2.04bn) during 2020, with an annual increase of 24 percent.
Telecom Egypt operates within the telecommunication services sector, focusing on integrated telecommunication services. It has subsidiaries operating across British Islands, Western Europe, Northern Africa and Middle East.
