UAP Old Mutual partners with Gertrude’s Hospital to introduce children medical cover

KENYA – UAP Old Mutual General Business, an investment, retirement, and insurance group, has partnered with Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital to introduce a comprehensive medical cover exclusively for children.

The offering serves children from birth to 18years old of age and is accessible without necessarily having to be under their parent’s or guardian’s covers.

David Kuria, Managing Director, UAP Old Mutual General Insurance said the latest offering has been expanded to include an outpatient benefit, an inpatient benefit and access to Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital and its satellite clinics.

It also comes with comprehensive cover including both preventing and curative care in addition to inpatient and outpatient care as well as surgical and specialist care.

The product gives parents various options to choose from based on their needs and family sizes with cover limits ranging from KSh50, 000 (US$460) to KSh200,000 (US$1,850) for outpatient and up to KSh5 million (US$46,000) for inpatient.

“We received a lot of feedback from our customers and intermediaries about improving this solution. This led us to include an outpatient benefit which was not there before. As a company, we understand the health of children is paramount to each parent or guardian and we believe in delivering value to our customers,” he said.

On his part, Dr. Robert Nyarango, CEO Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital said the product aims to increase the number of children who can access healthcare through insurance since it allows users to buy at the retail level which means you access it without being linked to any employer.

In a market that has an estimated two million insurance covers, half of them (one million), are children covers meaning there are millions of other children who are not medically insured.

UAP Old Mutual and Gertrude’s Hospital had recently announced a joint initiative to provide free COVID-19 testing for vulnerable children and PPEs to health workers in Nairobi.

This program will be implemented through Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital Outreach program in urban slum areas where healthcare support for children is much needed.

Through the partnership, UAP Old Mutual Group and Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation will see testing kits, disposable overall suits, disposable aprons, protective goggles, gloves and other equipment availed to healthcare workers.
